President's rule has been imposed in the northeastern state of Manipur. A day after suspending the assembly, all eyes are now on the BJP's central leadership regarding its next move in Manipur. Officials said security has been beefed up across the state after the Centre announced President's rule.
Political uncertainty in the state
Political uncertainty in the state arose days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post. The decision came after the BJP failed to build a consensus on the chief ministerial candidate despite several rounds of discussions between its Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and MLAs.
Assembly elections in the year 2027
Biren Singh, who is leading the BJP government in Manipur, resigned as Chief Minister after nearly 21 months of ethnic violence in which more than 250 people have been killed so far. The term of the Manipur Assembly is till 2027.
The House can be restored
After the CM resigned, Manipur BJP President A Sharda said that as per the constitutional process, 'the assembly has been suspended and he stressed that the House has not been dissolved yet. He said that the House can be restored after the situation improves in the state.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi targeted
Reacting to the development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said it was a belated admission of the BJP's total inability to govern Manipur. "Now, Prime Minister Modi cannot deny his direct responsibility for Manipur," he said in a post on social media platform X. "Has he finally made up his mind to visit the state and tell the people of Manipur and India about his plan to restore peace and normalcy?" Congress MP Rahul Gandhi asked.
CPIM demands early elections
Meanwhile, the Manipur CPI(M) unit said the President's rule should be revoked immediately and fresh elections held at the earliest. CPI(M) state committee secretary Ksha Shanta said the party along with other like-minded people would stand for the territorial integrity of Manipur during President's rule. He also claimed that selfish lust for power among MLAs has brought the state to such a situation.
