In the recent time india has suffered from many cyber attacks and one of the major attacks was the ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to block access to a computer system or its data, typically by encrypting the files, until a ransom is paid. The attacker demands payment, often in cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin), in exchange for the decryption key needed to restore access to the files. Even if the ransom is paid, there's no guarantee that the victim will regain access to their data.
Common Types of Ransomware:
Crypto Ransomware: Encrypts files on the victim's system, making them inaccessible.
Locker Ransomware: Locks the user out of their device entirely.
Double Extortion Ransomware: Not only encrypts files but also threatens to release sensitive data if the ransom is not paid.
Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS): A model where developers sell ransomware tools to other cybercriminals, who then execute attacks.
How Ransomware Spreads:
Phishing Emails: Infected attachments or malicious links that trick users into downloading ransomware.
Malicious Websites: Drive-by downloads where ransomware automatically installs when visiting compromised sites.
Software Vulnerabilities: Exploiting unpatched software to install ransomware without user intervention.
Protection Against Ransomware:
Regular backups of important data.
Keeping systems and software updated with the latest security patches.
Using robust security software, including antivirus and anti-malware.
Training employees or users on phishing and online safety practices.
Ransomware attacks can be highly disruptive, targeting individuals, businesses, hospitals, and even government institutions.
