WHO has issued a worldwide alert regarding monkeypox. Meanwhile, the first case of monkeypox has been seen in Pakistan. A day before this, Pakistan had issued an alert to prevent the possible spread of diseases through international travelers. This year's first case of monkeypox was reported in a citizen of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Thursday.Recently this person has returned from Saudi Arabia. Pakistan Health Ministry officials said that the youth is from Dir and is currently living in Mardan.
He said that the infected person was found to be suffering from mpox after returning from Saudi Arabia on August 3. Health Ministry officials further said that they have taken samples of people who came in contact with the infected person. After this, the health services have ordered strict monitoring on all incoming and outgoing routes. Taking further steps to prevent the spread of monkeypox, the Pakistani Ministry of Health held a session and issued advisories and guidelines regarding monkeypox.
Threat to India?
There has been no case of this virus in India yet. However, according to WHO, 27 cases of MPOX have been reported in India between January 2022 and June 2024. A large number of Indians live in the Gulf country. In such a situation, finding this case in Pakistan is a matter of concern for India also. Last year, 9 cases of MPpox were confirmed in Pakistan. All cases were among travellers returning from the Middle East and other countries. A patient who was infected with HIV and mumps later died in Islamabad.
584 people died in this country
The case of Mpox has wreaked the most havoc in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 548 people have died since the beginning of this year. All the provinces of the country are affected by it. WHO on Wednesday declared a global public health emergency due to the increasing cases of MPOX. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said on Thursday that the country has recorded 15,664 probable cases and 548 deaths since the beginning of the year, AFP reports.
