Prices increased so much year-on-year
According to the report, the prices of onion, potato and tomato increased by 53%, 50% and 18% year-on-year. While the reason for the decrease in the price of potato and onion was low income and the income of tomato, which affected the production due to heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. At the same time, the price of non-veg thali fell by 2% year-on-year to Rs 59.3 in September. Last year in September 2023, the price of non-veg thali was Rs 60.7.
More than the prices of pulses
The prices of pulses, which account for 9% of the cost of a thali, were 14% higher than last year as the initial stock was less due to lower production last year.
Spices also bring changes in prices
Crisil has calculated the average cost of preparing a thali at home based on current food prices in North, South, East and West India. Monthly changes affect the expenditure of the common man. Crisil's data also reveals the ingredients including cereals, pulses, broilers (chicken), vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas, which bring changes in the price of a thali.
Veg thali includes roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. On the other hand, chicken has been included in place of dal for non-veg thali.
Kharif supplies may improve
Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics Director (Research) Pushan Sharma said, "We expect onion prices to improve marginally once Kharif supplies arrive in the market. Potato prices are also expected to fall, although tomato prices may remain high due to low supplies."
