An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit Nepal on Friday morning. The tremors were felt twice. The first time the earthquake came near Kathmandu and the second time near the Bihar border. According to the National Seismological Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was Nepal. There is no information of any loss of life or property in this earthquake so far.
This earthquake hit four countries including India. Strong tremors of the earthquake were felt in many areas of India, Nepal, Tibet and Pakistan. The effect of the earthquake in Nepal was felt till Patna. People of Patna felt strong tremors at 2.35 am late night, after which people came out of their houses. Its intensity on the Richter scale was recorded as 5.5. At the same time, earthquake tremors were felt in Pakistan at 05.14 am. Its intensity on the Richter scale was measured at 4.5.
Know why earthquakes occur
There are 7 plates inside the earth, which keep rotating continuously. The zone where these plates collide more is called the fault line. Due to repeated collisions, the corners of the plates bend. When too much pressure is created, the plates start breaking. The energy below finds a way to come out and after the disturbance, an earthquake occurs.
How dangerous is an earthquake of which magnitude?
• An earthquake of 0 to 1.9 magnitude is very weak. It is detected only by a seismograph.
• An earthquake of 2 to 2.9 magnitude vibrates slightly on the Richter scale.
• An earthquake of 3 to 3.9 magnitude feels like a truck has passed by you.
• An earthquake of 4 to 4.9 magnitude can break windows. Also, frames hanging on the walls can fall.
• An earthquake of 5 to 5.9 magnitude can shake the furniture in the house.
• An earthquake of 6 to 6.9 magnitude can crack the foundation of buildings.
• An earthquake of 7 to 7.9 magnitude is dangerous. Buildings collapse due to this and pipes burst in the ground.
• An earthquake of 8 to 8.9 magnitude is very dangerous. Earthquakes of 8.8 to 8.9 magnitude caused a lot of destruction in many countries including Japan and China.
• An earthquake of 9 or more magnitude causes complete destruction. Buildings collapse. Tsunami hits near trees, plants and oceans.
