WhatsApp has banned more than 85 lakh Indian WhatsApp accounts violating the policy in September. The company has taken this step to increase security and prevent misuse of the platform. The company has revealed this in its monthly report.
84 lakh accounts were banned
This is not the first time the company has banned WhatsApp accounts, earlier also 84 lakh accounts were banned in India in August. According to WhatsApp's report, between September 1 and September 30, WhatsApp has banned 85,84,000 accounts, out of which 16,58,000 accounts were closed before receiving any report from the users.
WhatsApp, which has more than 600 million users, received 8,161 complaints in the month of September, out of which action has also been taken on 97. Regarding banning the accounts, the company said, we will maintain transparency in our work and include information about our efforts in future reports.
WhatsApp said, we allow users to block and report any contacts within the app itself. We pay close attention to user feedback and engage with experts to prevent misinformation, promote cybersecurity and maintain electoral integrity.
Action under IT Rule 2021
Let us tell you that the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting implemented the IT rules in 2021. Under this, it is mandatory for social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users to issue monthly reports. This report mentions every detail of the complaints of the users and the action taken on them. This action is taken under Rule 4(1)(D) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology Rules, 2021. This has been implemented to ensure the safety of users.
