Crop insurance week has started
The Union Agriculture Ministry has started the insurance scheme for Kharif crop this year. Recently, the Agriculture Ministry has informed that Crop Insurance Week (1-7 July 2024) has started. In this, farmer brothers and sisters have been requested to secure their income by joining PMFBY. By joining this scheme, farmers' crops get protection from natural disasters.
Under what conditions is security available?
Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, standing crops get protection in case of damage due to drought, flood, hail, storm, landslide, cyclone, water-logging, fire caused by lightning and other non-preventable risks. If a farmer has insured his crop, then if the crop gets destroyed due to the reasons mentioned above, then he will get compensation from the insurance company.
How much is the premium to be paid?
Under this scheme, farmers taking crop insurance have to pay a flat premium of only 2% for all Kharif crops and 1.5% for all Rabi crops. In case of annual commercial and horticultural crops the premium will be only 5%. The remaining premium is paid by the government. There is no upper limit on government subsidy in this scheme. Even if the remaining premium is 90%, it will be borne by the government.
Since when has PMFBY been running?
Actually, the crop insurance scheme was started in the country long ago. But, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new scheme Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) on 13 January 2016. In this scheme, some existing anomalies were removed so that the farmers get maximum benefits.

When will there be insurance for Kharif crop?
Insurance for Kharif crops has started under the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. SBI General Insurance Company has been nominated for the years 2024-25 and 2025-26. Kharif crops include paddy, maize, millet, jowar, urad, arhar, banana and chilli. For paddy, maize, millet, jowar, urad and arhar crops, two percent premium and five percent premium for banana and chilli crops is payable by the farmers. This year, the last date for getting insurance in Kharif season has been fixed as 31st July.
