A rare red weather warning has issued for the UK after Storm Éowyn battered Ireland, leaving 560,000 homes and businesses without power. Storm Herminia caused the worst flooding in decades in northwest France, while triggering red alerts for huge waves along the coast of northern Portugal and Spain. France's national weather agency on Monday placed the Ile-et-Vilaine department, in western France, on red alert due to the risk of major flooding. The worse of the storm is likely to hit in coming days. All schools and offices are closed and people are advised to remain indoor till the red alerts and warnings are over.
Damage to buildings and trees
Residents in western France used boats to escape their flooded homes on Monday as rivers and waterways broke their banks after successive storms battered Normandy and Brittany. Wind gusts as strong as 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour are expected along the Atlantic coast of Brittany. Ireland has recorded its strongest-ever mean wind speed, according to its meteorological service. Buildings and trees damaged as Storm Éowyn brings hurricane force wind.
Risk of Flooding
There is a high risk of flooding in urban areas. This would be mostly in West coast. Rainfall is though a not major concern here. Over 93,000 businesses and homes are currently without power .The stormy conditions boosted France’s wind generation to a record of almost 20 gigawatts on Sunday evening — the equivalent of about 20 nuclear reactors. There is also red alert in Northern Ireland. Waves as high as 14 meters (46 feet) are pounding a stretch of Portugal from Figueira da Foz to Viana do Castelo. Further north, the Spanish coast is being hit by waves of up to 12 meters. This has been the worst storm since November 2017.This is a highest gust ever recorded. Weather warnings were in parts of Spain, Portugal, France, the UK, and Ireland as Storm Herminia brought strong winds, heavy rain, and powerful waves.
