The corporation has now taken a new step to collect property tax in Chandigarh city. To collect property tax and to curb tax evasion, the municipal corporation officials have decided to start a door-to-door survey. During the survey, the officials will survey the property and check the tax levied on it. Apart from this, those properties will also be checked which have not paid tax yet. According to the municipal corporation officials, this survey will be done to simplify the process of property tax and update the list of taxpayers. This will let them know how many properties are there which are not paying property tax or are paying the wrong property tax because this is also causing financial loss to the corporation.
This is how the survey will be done
The municipal corporation team will conduct a survey in two categories. They will go door to door under residential and commercial categories. During this, they will also check the status of property tax. There will be physical verification of the properties so that it can be known that the tax is being calculated correctly. Strict action will be taken against those properties whose tax is not deposited or those who pay the wrong tax. Apart from this, reconsidering the target set for property tax for the new year is also considered necessary in this survey. For this reason, the officials have decided to start door to door survey.
Penalty will be imposed on tax
The property holders of the city were asked to deposit the property tax by March 31. Property tax could be paid to the Municipal Corporation with a 10% penalty till March 31, but after March 31, the property holders will have to pay a 20 percent penalty on the total amount and an extra 18% interest on the outstanding amount. Municipal Corporation officials have also said that strict action will be taken against those who are deliberately not paying their property tax.
In this, apart from fining the people, action can also be taken to seal the property. Municipal Corporation officials have also appealed to the people of Mohali to pay their property tax on time. They should fully support them in this survey so that the development work of the city is benefited. Let us tell you that the property tax for the year 2024-25 was Rs 4100 lakh. At the same time, the total property tax income in March has become Rs 4500 lakh.
