Massive violence erupted again in Syria, fierce fighting between Assad supporters and HTS security forces, 48 killed so far
There has been a violent conflict between the security forces of the current Syrian government and supporters of Bashar al-Assad in Syria's Latakia province. So far 48 people have been killed in this. Pro-Assad rebels are increasing their influence in the area. New security forces are trying to control them.
Violent clashes have started once again in Syria. There has been firing between supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad and the HTS security forces of the interim President Abu Mohammad al-Julani government. 48 people have lost their lives in this so far. This is the most violent clash after the uproar that took place during the removal of Bashar al-Assad from power in December last year. There has been a clash between security forces and Assad supporters in the Jableh city and surrounding villages of Latakia province.
16 Security Personnel killed
Among the 48 people who have lost their lives in the violence that erupted in Syria, 16 are security personnel of the Julani government. 28 pro-Assad fighters have been killed, while four civilians have also lost their lives. This conflict started this week when, after some sporadic incidents, pro-Assad supporters attacked security checkpoints. 16 security personnel were killed in this. After this, the security forces retaliated by attacking pro-Assad supporters with helicopters and cannons.
Curfew imposed in many areas
After the violence, curfew has been imposed in areas like Latakia, Tartus and Homs. The number of Alawites is very high in these areas. Bashar al-Assad also belongs to this community. In December last year, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led by Julani captured Damascus and ousted Assad from power. Since then, the new government has been running a campaign against Assad supporters. This has created a constant tension.
Syria has been in a civil war like situation for a long time and many armed groups are present here. The current Julani government is constantly trying to increase its control but it is facing difficulties in Latakia. Latakia province has been Assad's stronghold and there is a large population of Alawite community there. In such a situation, violent incidents have been continuously reported between security forces and Assad supporters here.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has reported that the Julani government has carried out attacks on armed people in the forests using helicopters. Other heavy weapons have been used on several villages. It has been learnt that common people have also been targeted. Human rights organisations have expressed concern over the new wave of violence in Syria.
