A case of death of a prisoner under suspicious circumstances has come to light in the district jail of Rupnagar. The deceased has been identified as Kabaddi player Charanpreet Singh. He was lodged in Rupnagar jail under the NDPS Act for the last 14 months. The jail administration has kept the body of the prisoner in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital.
Family made allegations of beating
After the news of death, SSP along with Jail IG of Rupnagar range reached the spot with heavy police force.Mirtak Charanpreet Singh's nephew and other family members, who came out of jail on bail a day ago, said that the jail administration had beaten up some convicts over the recovery of a mobile phone in the jail and this was also the reason for Charanpreet's death.
Drugs and mobile phones found inside the jail
The relatives of the deceased are demanding action in this matter. Nephew Avinash alleged that drugs and mobile phones are often found inside the jail and all these are provided by the jail authorities for which they charge thousands of rupees.
The police have kept the body of the deceased in the mortuary and action is being taken, but the anger of the family members of the deceased has not subsided yet. I.G. Jail RK Arda said that after initial treatment in the jail when the health of the convict Charanpreet Singh deteriorated, he was taken to the government hospital in Rupnagar, but the doctors there declared him dead.
Death will be revealed after investigation
He said that a judicial investigation into this entire matter has also started in which all the parties will come forward. So far no action has been taken against any jail employee. The jailer rejected the allegations made by the relatives of the deceased and said that everything will become clear in the judicial investigation.
