According to research published in the journal 'Plos One', Russia tops the list followed by Ukraine, China, America, Nigeria and Romania. The key categories the researchers identified included technology products and services such as malware; These include hacking, including ransomware, and scams and money laundering, including credit card data theft and advance fee fraud.
92 survey responses
The survey team received 92 completed survey responses. The researchers found that the top six countries were among the top ten countries under each cyber crime category. Russia and Ukraine have a higher incidence of technical cyber-crime, the authors wrote in the study, while Nigerian cyber-criminals engage in less technical forms of cyber-crime.
India ahead in scam
According to the study, India was found to be ahead in terms of scams. In addition, more cases of technical crimes were reported in Romania and the United States. Study co-author Miranda Bruce is from the University of Oxford, UK.
