The Punjab government has announced a holiday in the state. On the occasion of Prakash Parv of Shri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji, a holiday has been declared in Amritsar district on October 19. All schools, offices will remain closed on this occasion. Along with this, the next day i.e. October 20, being Sunday, schools, colleges, offices and banks across the state will remain closed.
At the same time, today also there is a holiday in Punjab on the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti on October 17. This holiday has been declared for all citizens in honor of Valmiki Jayanti on October 17. The Uttar Pradesh government has also announced several consecutive days of holidays at the end of this month, in which government offices, banks and schools will remain closed. Apart from weekly holidays on Saturday and Sunday, there will also be a public holiday.

Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Ashwin month. In the year 2024, Valmiki Jayanti will be celebrated on October 17. This day is also known as Pragat Divas.
History and Significance of Valmiki Jayanti
The story goes that Maharishi Valmiki met Lord Rama during his exile. He also rescued Sita when Lord Rama had exiled her from the kingdom of Ayodhya and gave her shelter. It was in his ashram that she gave birth to twins Luv and Kush. During their childhood, the great sage became their instructor and taught them the Ramayana which has 24,000 verses (Shlokas) and 7 cantos (Kands).
