Telangana Police has registered a case against 25 celebrities and influencers for allegedly promoting illegal betting apps. These include actors like Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi and Nidhi Agarwal. They have been accused of allegedly promoting betting apps.
Miyapur police in Cyberabad registered the case following a complaint by 32-year-old businessman Phanindra Sarma. He had accused these celebrities of promoting betting apps and misleading the public. Among the 25 celebrities against whom the case has been registered, 6 are big stars of South cinema.
Cases were registered against 11 film personalities and influencers under these sections
It is known that Telangana Police is actively targeting celebrities involved in the promotion of betting apps. A few days ago, Panjagutta police registered cases against 11 film personalities and social media influencers including Kiran Goud, Vishnu Priya, Shyamala, Imran Khan, Ritu Chaudhary, Harsh Sai, Tasty Teja and Bandaru Seshayani Supritha for allegedly promoting betting apps. A case was registered against them under section 318 (4) BNS, 3, 3 (A), 4 TSGA and 66 D ITA Act-2008.
Some celebrities apologised, admitted involvement
Amid the growing scrutiny, several Telugu TV personalities including Surekha Vani, Supritha, Ritu Choudhry and Getup Srinu have publicly apologised, admitting their past involvement in promoting betting platforms. They claimed that they were unaware of the negative consequences at the time. According to M9 News, the campaign led by Telangana RTC MD Sajjanar urged these celebrities to raise awareness. However, their sudden change from promoting betting apps to then apologising led to a lot of criticism.
