The Income Tax Department has sent a recovery notice of Rs 1700 crore to the Congress Party. In this notice sent by the IT Department, along with the tax, penalty and interest have also been added which is for the year 2017-18 to 2020-21. At the same time, the income tax notice has further increased the problems of Congress during the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The court rejected the petition
Congress had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding re-examination of the income tax penalty for 2017-2021, but the court rejected the Congress' petition. After this a notice has been sent to the party.
Income tax of Rs 135 crore has been collected
Earlier, Income Tax had recovered ₹135 crore from the accounts of Congress. This recovery from Congress was made for 2018-19. In fact, Congress had submitted its papers a month after filing the annual income and had also violated the rules under which it is exempted from filing the income.
Congress made allegations
Congress has alleged on this notice and recovery action of Income Tax that the government is seizing their accounts before the elections. He also said that the party does not have funds to contest elections, hence it is not able to spend money on campaigning etc. However, the Income Tax Department says it is merely making its own recovery and has not frozen any accounts.
