Amid the turmoil in Bangladesh for some time now, global concern has grown over the incidents of attacks on religious minorities. US security advisor Jack Sullivan has discussed this with Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus. Sullivan has urged Muhammad Yunus to stop the violence immediately.
US expressed concern
The US has expressed concern over the attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke to Bangladesh's interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on this issue on Monday. Sullivan expressed his concern to Yunus on the issue of human rights in Bangladesh. The White House has said that Muhammad Yunus has promised to protect the human rights of people of all religions in Bangladesh. He said that his government is committed to the safety of all citizens and all steps have been taken in this direction.
Human Rights protection
The main topic of the phone conversation between Jake Sullivan and Muhammad Yunus was the protection of human rights in Bangladesh. According to a statement issued by the White House, after listening to Sullivan's concerns, Yunus promised to respect and protect the human rights of all citizens regardless of religion. During this, Sullivan acknowledged the challenges faced by Bangladesh and also praised Muhammad Yunus' leadership in difficult times. At the same time, he also raised questions on not taking quick steps to handle the deteriorating situation.
Continuous violence in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has been witnessing heavy political turmoil since June this year. Sheikh Hasina's government fell in August this year after protests turned violent. After the fall of Hasina government, an interim government has been formed under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus. Since the change of power, violence has been seen in Bangladesh against the leaders of Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League and religious minorities. Mohammad Yunus has repeatedly appealed to stop the violence but his words have not had any effect on the ground.
Many countries, including India and the US, have expressed concern over attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Indian-American Democratic Congressman Thanedar recently urged the White House to strongly raise this issue with the Bangladesh leadership. Thanedar has expressed serious concern over the ongoing violence against Hindus.
Yunus' leadership has failed to stop attacks on Hindus Muhammad Yunus' government has failed to control Jamaat-e-Islami and fundamentalist organizations. Fundamentalist elements are targeting temples across the country and attacking Hindus.
