Former US President Donald Trump has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has acquitted him in the case of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election and inciting his supporters to attack the Parliament. The Supreme Court has ruled that former presidents have absolute immunity from suit for their official acts.
The US Supreme Court on Monday sent the case related to immunity from trial against former President Donald Trump back to the lower court for hearing. The move could prolong the trial in the Washington criminal case against Trump and eliminate the possibility that the former president could be tried before the November presidential election. Trump is accused of conspiring to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election.
What did the court say in the historic decision
The justices, in a historic 6-3 decision, said for the first time that former presidents have blanket immunity from suit for their official acts, but no immunity for unofficial acts. However, the judges ordered a lower court to decide how to enforce the decision in Trump's case.
Trump declared himself innocent
At the same time, the Republican Party leader and former President has denied doing anything wrong and claimed that this prosecution and three other cases are politically motivated to prevent him from returning to the White House.
Trump has been convicted
In May, Trump became the first former president to be convicted of a crime in a New York court. He was found guilty of falsifying business records to conceal payments to a porn actress during the 2016 presidential election.A porn actress claims Trump had sex with her and paid her not to disclose it, but the former president has denied the allegations. Trump still faces trial in three other cases.
