Jalandhar: Puran Shah Koti, the revered father of famous Sufi singer Master Saleem and a towering figure who enriched the world of Sufi music with his melodious voice and spiritual teachings, passed away on Tuesday in Jalandhar. He was 80 years old and had been unwell for some time. The news of his demise has sent a wave of grief across the entire music fraternity, his disciples, and admirers.

Puran Shah Koti breathed his last at a private hospital in Jalandhar, where he had been admitted for treatment a few days prior. He was not merely Master Saleem’s father; he himself was a pillar of Sufi music, dedicating his entire life to musical devotion and Sufi traditions. Born in a small village near Phagwara in Punjab, he developed a deep passion for music from childhood. He received his initial musical training from his father and gurus and soon developed his unique style of Sufi singing. His voice possessed a magic that touched the soul directly. He was not only an exceptional singer but also a spiritual guru who taught hundreds of disciples the lessons of music and life at his ‘dera’ (spiritual abode).

Puran Shah Koti popularized Sufi music among the masses by performing at ‘akhaaras’ (musical gatherings), ‘melas’ (fairs), and religious events across Punjab. His singing was imbued with a profound spiritual experience and a sense of devotion. He was an expert in Qawwali, Kafi, and Sufi Kalam. He inspired many young artists and introduced them to the rich heritage of Sufi music. Among his most prominent disciples was his son, Master Saleem, who received his first musical lessons from his father and has now become a big name in Sufi singing internationally. Puran Shah Koti not only taught Saleem the techniques of singing but also introduced him to the philosophy of Sufism and the spiritual aspects of music. Saleem often publicly referred to his father as his first and most important guru.

On the passing of Puran Shah Koti, the Chief Minister of Punjab, leaders of various political parties, musicians, singers, and personalities from the art world have expressed deep sorrow. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister stated that Puran Shah Koti’s demise is an irreparable loss for Sufi music. He played a significant role in keeping Punjab’s folk and Sufi traditions alive. Singer Hans Raj Hans said that Puran Shah Koti was a great soul whose music would always inspire us. Renowned Sufi singer Satwinder Bitti said that she had lost a guru, a guide, and a mentor.

Puran Shah Koti’s life was a unique confluence of music and spirituality. He dedicated his entire life to the service of Sufi music. His passing marks the end of an era in Sufi music, but his legacy will always live on through his disciples, especially Master Saleem. The Kalams he sang and his teachings will continue to inspire future generations. Puran Shah Koti had carved a place in the hearts of millions through his art and devotion. His demise has created a deep void among music lovers in Punjab and across India, which will be difficult to fill. He leaves behind a rich legacy of music and countless memories.
