General elections may be held in Britain in July. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has not ruled out the possibility of elections in July. According to the latest estimates, Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party may get swept in the upcoming elections. In such a situation, many Conservative leaders are changing sides and joining the Labor Party.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday refused to flatly rule out the possibility of a general election in July amid the defection of one of his Conservative Party MPs to join the opposition Labor Party. Municipal body and mayor elections are to be held in the country on May 2. MP Dan Poulter has said he will defect to the opposition before the next election because he can no longer defend the Tory (Conservative) government's handling of the National Health Service (NHS).
Did not rule out elections in July
During an interview with 'Sky News', Sunak was asked whether his repeated talk of holding a general election in the latter part of the year meant that July could also be held. The Prime Minister said, “As far as the general elections are concerned, I have been very clear many times and once again that I am not going to say more than what I have already said. I have been very clear about this.
Sunak claimed to improve health care
On the government-funded NHS, Sunak said waiting times for patients seeking treatment had fallen. He also mentioned his successes as Prime Minister in reducing inflation, increasing the defense budget and getting the Rwanda Bill passed by the Parliament. With the passage of the bill, illegal immigrants will start being deported to the East African country of Rwanda from the end of this year.
Preparations to stop the rebellion against Sunak
Meanwhile, according to some reports in the UK media, the discussion over the threat of holding elections in the summer is being used by the Prime Minister's Office-cum-residence 'Downing Street' as a tactic to delay the local elections later this week. In case of adverse results, internal rebellion in the party against Sunak's leadership can be prevented.
Conservative Party likely to lose
Most opinion polls project the ruling Conservative Party being swept in the general election, so most sitting Tory MPs hoping to save their seats may not be in favor of early elections.
