The name of the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has been finalized. Chief Justice of India Dr. Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud (DY Chandrachud) is retiring on 10 November 2024. Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take over as Chief Justice on 11 November 2024 for a term of 6 months. He will remain in his post till 13 May 2025. After this he will retire. In January 2019, he was promoted to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court. He is currently on the roster for company law, arbitration, service law, maritime law, civil law and commercial law, among others.

In his four and a half year tenure, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been part of 358 benches and has given more than 90 judgments. In 2023, he delivered the Constitution Bench verdict in Shilpa Shailesh. In UOI vs UCC, he was part of the bench that ruled on a petition seeking additional compensation for Bhopal gas tragedy victims.
Last year he was part of a 3-judge bench that heard reservation in promotion for SCs and STs. In 2019, he gave a majority verdict in the famous 'RTI Judgment'. In 2022, he said that arbitrators cannot unilaterally fix their fees.
