After Corona, now Human Metapneumovirus has created havoc in China. According to the information, China has reported increasing cases of HMPV, its biggest impact is being seen on young children. Children under 2 years of age are most affected among them. Infections caused by HMPV are increasing as the administration is stepping up screening, detection and isolation protocols to deal with unknown pathogens.
Chinese government’s full preparations
The Chinese government is operating a surveillance system for pneumonia of unknown origin, to avoid the low preparations seen during the COVID-19 outbreak five years ago. According to Reuters, cases of HMPV have been reported rapidly in China, and there is also a risk of spread of other infectious diseases like rhinovirus in the country. Hospitals are crowded with patients.
What is HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus)?
This virus can cause upper and lower respiratory diseases in people of all ages. However, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to it. HMPV was discovered in 2001.
Its symptoms
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the symptoms of the virus are similar to other viral infections that occur in the winter season. The most important symptoms of HMPV virus in China are – cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath.
The clinical symptoms of infection can increase and lead to problems such as bronchitis or pneumonia. This is similar to other viruses that cause upper and lower respiratory infections. People may show symptoms three to six days after being infected. The duration of the disease can vary depending on its severity.
Preventive measures
To prevent this, whenever you come home, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Do not touch the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Maintain distance from infected people, if you are feeling symptoms similar to the virus, then isolate yourself. Cover your mouth with your hand or something when you sneeze. Avoid sharing cups and eating utensils with infected people. Stay home if you are sick.
