The central government is going to bring the Digital Personal Data Protection Act regarding social media. With this, children below the age of 18 years will have to take permission from their parents to create a social media account. The central government has shared its draft on social media on January 3.

Know what is Digital Personal Protection Act

This bill was approved by Parliament about one and a half years ago. According to the notification issued for the draft, the draft of the rules has been issued on the basis of the powers given to the Center under subsections 1 and 2 of section 40 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

The rules also describe the system of taking consent from parents. It has also been said that parental consent is necessary for children to use their data in any form. The companies that collect and use personal data in the Act are called ‘data fiduciaries’.

According to the draft, data fiduciary companies will have to ensure that the consent of the parents is taken before processing any kind of personal data of the children. For this, the company will have to take appropriate technical and organizational measures.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in the notification that people can go to Mygov.in and register their objections and suggestions regarding this draft. People’s objections and suggestions will be considered from February 18.
